“I was fortunate to take Spanish classes with Beth Van Oss over the course of many years— from elementary and middle school throughout high school—and later went on to major in Spanish in college. Beth brought a creative approach to each lesson, along with a wealth of knowledge from extensive travels and experiences abroad. She taught with kindness, patience, and humor, and consistently offered personalized attention to her students—whether they needed extra help or sought an additional challenge. Beth helped me develop a love and appreciation for the Spanish language—and for foreign cultures more broadly—that served me well in my early career working in the language translation industry. She is a testament to the lasting influence a dedicated teacher can have on the trajectories of her students, and I would wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone looking for a Spanish language tutor."

Former H.S. and Elementary Student

"I had the pleasure of being a student of Beth's on a couple of occasions. The one that stands out to me most was a multi-disciplinary river course I took with her when I was a student at Prescott College (PC). This liberal arts school had set a high bar for the kind of educational experiences I'd come to expect and crave. I'd transferred to PC after years of mediocre experiences at other colleges, and this was my last attempt to finish my degree. Not because I wasn't smart, but because I was bored and completely disinterested. I'd decided I might be better off on my own. Later, I would learn that part of this was because of my neurodivergent brain (ADHD/autism), but regardless of the cause, Beth helped me find ways to learn (and complete my courses) that worked for me. Because of Beth's support, I was able to see myself as a capable student. This changed the course of my life in ways I'll always be grateful for. My time with Beth was one of the experiences that taught me that learning and school could be nourishing, challenging, and fun. She had a fantastic rapport with the other students in the class and the other instructor. She was attentive and able to tailor the learning experience to each person on the course.

Beth has a deep understanding of teaching techniques and can adapt to a diverse range of learning styles. I remember in particular her encouragement for me to continue to express myself with writing and poetry. This is still a big part of my life today, and my experience with Beth made all the difference. I would definitely recommend her to any student who finds conventional learning environments difficult to navigate and/or is looking for the right balance of challenge and success. Beth has the ability and desire to understand what her students need and to shape the experience to meet their needs in ways that are engaging and encouraging."

"I would absolutely recommend Beth Van Oss to anyone! I took an online introductory Spanish course with her and it was a fantastic experience. Her class was well-organized and easy to navigate. She was so helpful in answering my questions over email and meeting on Zoom to work with me "face to face." Sometimes it can be intimidating to learn a new language, but Beth made me feel comfortable and confident throughout the process, which I am grateful for. After her class, I traveled to Guatemala and was pleasantly surprised by the skills I acquired."

"It has been a lifelong goal of mine to be fluent in Spanish, and I have therefore had many Spanish teachers. I had the opportunity to take Spanish classes from Beth Van Oss in both High School and College and can say that her experiential approach to education and her creative enthusiasm for the language have left a lasting impression on me. I distinctly remember being given the opportunity to choose a song in Spanish and work on translating it for her class, and then the entire class got to listen and sing along! Not only does Beth take the time to scaffold learning to each individual student, but she also brings her breadth and depth of understanding of the cultural side of Spanish along with her. Don't be surprised if you are exposed to her many friends, travel stories, pictures, and recipes along your learning journey. I highly recommend taking a Spanish class (or two!) from Beth Van Oss.  "
